Here are 20 Best things to See, Eat & Do in the most famous Greek Island!
1. ENJOY THE CLIFF & CALDERA VIEWS
Every street you go in Santorini is filled with so much charm! Beauty exists all over the place. It’s always breath-taking whenever you gaze at the striking Aegean Sea anytime of the day. The white houses and blue domed churches are so picturesque, you would not stop snapping away!
2. FIND THE CHURCH BELLS IN FIROSTEFANI
If your agenda for the day is to find that Postcard shot close to the town of Fira, head over to the Assumption of the blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church… This is the most photographed church all over the island! You’ll find directions posted everywhere directing you to this iconic spot and yes, the views are so lit!
3. QUADBIKE AROUND THE ISLAND
If you have a driver’s license, then I highly suggest renting an ATV on this trip! You don’t have to worry about parking, you can pretty much park everywhere! The volcanic mountains, The lapis lazuli waters… The views are unlike anywhere else! Oh, and please… Sunscreen, sunglasses and helmets are very much essential! Bring all these alongside with a lot of confidence and common sense and you’ll have the most epic road trip in your whole life!
4. EAT AN AUTHENTIC GREEK SALAD
I have never ever tasted a salad so light and refreshing! The bright, vibrant flavours of tomatoes, green bell peppers, red onions and cucumbers look like perfection on a plate! The olives and feta cheese plus the wonderful fresh ingredients… Oh man, you’ll never get enough of this traditional Greek dish! Simple and straightforward but totally astounding!
5. SUNSET DIP AT KAMARI BEACH
Not your typical beach because the sand is black and pebbly… but it’s a volcanic island so what do you expect?! It’s a lovely sea to look at and the planes fly right over you, so much fun! Lots of local restaurants offer free lounge chairs when you eat with them, you don’t need to hire one! Just save those euros for a beachside foot massage! I came here for a little break from the crowds and it was indeed so therapeutic and relaxing!
6. PARTY IN A CATAMARAN
Avoid the crowds and sip your way around Santorini! Morning or sunset cruise? Either way you will enjoy magnificent views and & eat freshly prepared Greek dishes aboard a catamaran. Swim at the famous hot springs, sunbathe on deck or snorkel in the island’s crystal blue waters! The choice is yours!
7. FISH SPA EXPERIENCE
I found this place purely by accident and it was certainly a very fun activity! Don’t you worry, feet and legs are to be washed carefully and checked for any cuts before being immersed in the tank! I understand that this is not for everyone but from my experience, the water was sparkling clean and hygienic! I am not sure if the fish nibbling my feet did anything but I felt really good right after! Thank you, fish doctors!
8. FIRA TO OIA HIKE
The best way to see all of Santorini is this hike! This has got to be one of the best walks I’ve ever done in my life! You’ll see clifftop mansions, traditional villages, tavernas and cave houses that others won’t see from the comfort of a bus! The views are wonderful all throughout and when you look at the horizon, you’ll whisper to yourself “Man, I’m so blessed right now!” Just avoid the hottest part of the day and this will be the highlight of your Santorini vacay!
9. A BOAT TRIP TO WHITE, BLACK & RED BEACH
Hop on and hop off the shallow waters of White, Black and Red Beach from a local boat for only 10 Euros! The best 10 Euros you’ll ever spend in Greece! Such a wonderful scenic experience as you can see huge white cliffs, stunning coastlines and volcanic rock formations during the ride! Get that nice tan as the boat journeys from one beach to another or jump off and swim in the relaxing warm waters if you please! And don’t worry, after a long day of beach hopping, plenty of good taverns await at the jetty!
10. DONKEY RIDE IN FIRA
One of the most unique experiences in Santorini is riding a donkey! Because where else can you ride a donkey, right? BUT! But! BUT! Just because you can ride them, doesn’t mean you should. I included this in the list for awareness! Because I wouldn’t support animal abuse for human entertainment! #sorrynotsorry
11. THE SANTORINI CABLE CAR RIDE
This option beats riding the donkeys! This is the only way to go up and down without supporting animal cruelty! You can also travel from the old port to the beautiful capital but that means walking up 600 steps under the hot sun and walking up a path covered in donkey poop! Save yourself from exhaustion and just ride the cable car! Take in the spectacular view of the caldera, the sea and the volcano from this short scenic ride! Save yourself from trouble and just hop on one!
12. EXPLORE AKROTIRI
Not a lot of Santorini travellers know about Akrotiri! Be the first among your friends and visit this quiet little village tucked in the southern region of the island! Go to the light house, see a castle or explore an archaeological site, you will be surprised on how much you could do in a day’s excursion!
13. PITA BREAD, TZATZIKI & FAVA BEANS!
I literally ate pita bread dipped in tzatziki and fava beans every single day while I was in Santorini! Greek dips are cool and creamy making a perfect spread over some warm bread! May they be your appetizer or main course, they’re always tasty and hearty any time of the day!
14. WANDER IN THE ISLAND’S MAIN TOWN, FIRA!
Majority of the hotels, nightclubs and shopping centres in the island are located in Fira! Aside from the astonishing views of the caldera, there are abundance of incredible things to do! Cathedrals, art galleries, museums, open-air cinemas and the most rated cafes and restaurants are all here! This is where you see all the cruise ships and the donkeys too! So before going anywhere else, make sure you go around Fira first lovelies!
15. LIVE A LITTLE, BOOK THAT ROOM WITH A POOL!
While this is not a must, try anyway. How good is it to enjoy the magical sunsets and sunrises while sunbathing in your own pool? Imagine a room perched in a cliff with a private veranda and a direct full view of the caldera & the sea… Yes, I know it could be a bit pricey, but if you want some exclusivity, penny pinch a little bit before your trip!
16. SEAFOOD FEAST AT AMMOUDI BAY
Below the busy and buzzy town of Oia is the Ammoudi Bay fishing village. Restaurants around the area serve variety of seafood fresh from the grill and Greek delicacies by the water! I scored a table at the edge of the sea during my visit and what a view watching the boats moving in and out of the harbour! Of course, an experience like this will not come without a cost but although expensive, it’s well worth every single euro!
17. TRINKET SHOPPING FROM THE LOCALS
Is there a better place to find a unique souvenir than from a local? If you’re after a thoughtful gift for yourself or for your loved ones that will forever remind you of Santorini, buy lovely trinkets from the locals themselves! If you want customised earrings and necklaces, they can make them in front of you while you wait! They’re super friendly and chatty, you will really feel the warmth of Greek hospitality! #SUPPORTLOCALS
18. WITNESS THE WORLD RENOWNED OIA SUNSET
So, what’s the fuzz about the sunset in Oia? I didn’t see any big deal about it at all! But when I experienced it with my own eyes and with the person I love the most… It was indeed magnificent, mesmerizing, I didn’t want it to ever end! That moment when the sun sinks into the sea and different shades of pink, red, & yellow envelope the village is such a magical hour, it makes everything around so beautiful! And as the sky dims, people from the streets, the castle, the rooftops and the ruins were all applauding together making it an even more special experience! Yes people, it’s true when they say that the sunset in Oia is not like any other sunset!
19. VISIT ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS BOOKSTORES, THE ATLANTIS!
Even if books aren’t your thing, Atlantis bookstore deserves a spot in your Santorini itinerary! There are tons and tons of books and a lot of thought-provoking scribbles on the walls. The good thing is that you can enjoy your reading material in their rooftop while gazing at the sweeping views of Oia! No wonder why National Geographic listed it as one of the top 10 bookstores in the world! And yes, you read it right! You can rent-a-cat for 5 Euros! T & C’s apply! Don’t worry… The owners will be very much willing to answer all your concerns!
20. SOAK IN THE CLIFFSIDE CHARM OF OIA
I’ve been to a lot of cities and every single city looks the same. But Santorini is different, there’s no other place like it! So while you’re here, soak it all in! The view looks better than the postcards, it’s even more striking than you have ever imagined! There’s something special about Oia… the stone paved-alleys, blue and red painted doors, the barrel shaped roofs, public squares and churches, infinity pools and personal jacuzzis, gourmet cafes and restaurants, boutiques and bazaars oh my gosh… I am super duper in love! Please take me back!
Now ladies and gentlemen, if Santorini is not paradise… I don’t know what is! If these 20 bucket list experiences don’t make you book a trip to Greece.. I don’t know what will! I had the best time of my life in the island and I know I will be coming back very soon!
